Hunt for electric station thieves
Police have issued an appeal after thieves stole copper tape from an electricity substation near Colwyn Bay.The offenders got into the Scottish Power station in Mochdre despite it being surrounded by a 10-foot metal fence and having padlocked entry gates.
Thirty kilograms of copper earth tape was pulled away from electrical apparatus and stolen.
Officers said the thieves had put their lives in "extreme danger" and caused an estimated £2,000 of damage.
The theft happened sometime between 8 and 22 March.
Pc Mark Jones, one of the investigating officers, said: "The substation is connected to the National Grid and is used by Scottish Power.
"It is an extremely dangerous site for unauthorised and untrained persons to enter and those responsible for this theft have put themselves in extreme danger - they had come within centimetres of death."
Repairs to the site were carried out immediately by Scottish Power.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Pc Mark Jones on 0845 6071001 (Welsh Language line) or 0845 6071002 (English Language line) or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
