Bronze statue in Colwyn Bay stolen for scrap, warn police
The sculpture is unique, say police
Police are warning a unique solid bronze statue taken during an art gallery break-in in Conwy county might have been stolen for scrap.
The 2ft-high sculpture of a figure holding a naked woman was taken in a burglary at the Bay Gallery in Colwyn Bay overnight on Monday.
Officers say the piece may have been stolen for scrap and have alerted merchants to be on the lookout.
CCTV and forensic inquiries have also taken place.
The break-in happened between 20:00 BST on Monday and 06:00 on Tuesday at the gallery, which is in the Bay View Centre in the town.
Investigating officer PC Huw Capper at Colwyn Bay police station said: "The solid bronze statue measures around 2ft in height and was produced by a local sculptor.
"I am therefore very keen to hear from anyone who was in the Sea View Road, and particularly the Bay View shopping centre pedestrianised zone between those times, that may have seen anyone acting suspiciously or who may know who was responsible for this burglary."
PC Capper said he would like to hear from anyone with information.
"The owner of the statue, designed and produced the statue and was selling it in a local gallery.
"This is his livelihood, it is a unique sculpture and I appeal for any information, that will result in the repatriation of the sculpture with its owner," he said.
"It is a possibility that the piece was stolen for scrap, and I also request scrap merchants to be on the lookout for the item if it is brought into them,
"I can confirm that CCTV inquiries are taking place and forensic officers have been in attendance."
