In a statement the head, Patrick Lee Browne, said an allegation of abuse has been made by a man while he was a pupil at Rydal School in the 1970s.
"There has been no suggestion that the allegations relate to any pupils or staff currently at the school, or that there are any concerns for the wellbeing and protection of current pupils," he said.
'Assistance'
"The fact that these are historic allegations does not, however, make them less serious.
"We have invited the former pupil to formalise his complaint by initiating a police investigation, and we have provided the police with all the relevant information and are giving them every assistance we can."
Mr Browne said the school was carrying out its own investigation into the allegations.
"While that process is under way it would not be appropriate for me to say anything further," he added.
