Colwyn Bay: £1.1m church plans backed by councillors
Three-storey place of worship will derelict youth centre and garages in Queen's Drive
Plans have been supported by the town council for a church costing more than £1m to be built in Colwyn Bay.
The New Life Revival Church want to build a three-storey church on Queen’s Drive near the heart of the town.
The Church, established in 1995, has seen its congregation outgrow the current facilities they use in Llanddulas.
The church is estimated to cost £1.1m and will replace a derelict youth centre and garages, which will be torn down.
The plans were enthusiastically approved by Bay of Colwyn Town Council last week.
The final decision will go to Conwy County Council planners.
Mark Bowler, pastor of the New Hope Revival Church, said: “We purchased the land 12 months ago and have spent time in discussion with the county council to develop our ideas to be in keeping with their Colwyn Bay Master Plan.
“We have then worked with our developers to put together the plans which went to planning recently.
“Our vision is for a modern, purpose built community facility that will serve the community of Colwyn Bay as well as house the church.
“We did look at a number of different properties on the market in the town including old churches and community halls, but they were not in keeping with our vision for a modern facility.”
Mr Bowler added: “We have a strong desire to serve the local community and currently offer a number of services and activities to the people of Colwyn Bay and the surrounding area.
“We want to expand our activities but our biggest limitation is the lack of a community facility from which to base everything.
“In particular we will focus the services in the facility around care and support for the elderly.”
Town councillor Neil Bastow, who sits on the general purpose and planning committee, said: “The only issue the committee have is that the sign is a bit large, other than that it sailed through.
“The church should re-use and revitalise an area of the town .
“In the end investment in Colwyn Bay is to be welcomed and the church as far as I’m concerned is doing a great service to the town, as long as the sign gets smaller.”
The plans will go before Conwy Council planning committee next month.
